A. DESCRIPTION

 

Communication Systems provides experiences in the fields of imaging technology, graphic productions, video and media, technical design, and various modes of communicating information through the use of data. Students develop critical-thinking and problem-solving skills using the universal systems model. Students also learn about the impact of communication on society and potential career fields relating to communications.

B. ORGANIZATION

This course will cover the competencies listed in the Course competency list. Approximately 10 competencies will be covered each week covering all required including Work Place readiness, Industry and Student Life, Communication Systems and Data, Technical Design, Imaging Technology, Graphic Production and Video and Media Technology. Each competency area will include class discussion, hands on investigation and independent deliverables including Friday homework projects, weekly quizzes quarterly projects and a semester exam.  All competencies will be dated, evaluated weekly and provided in an in class record for student review.

C. COURSE OBJECTIVES

1.     Introduce students to work place communication requirements, professional competencies and ethics, and project management practices.

2.     To introduce students to various forms of imaging, video and graphic production as communication media.

3.     Review the impacts of media on communication in the world today and how to facilitate effective communications

4.     Introduce AutoCad as preparatory step to Technical Design.

E. TEXT AND REQUIRED SUPPLIES

1.     Materials will be provided; however, students will be encouraged to use out of class materials to integrate multiple technologies in Quarterly Projects.

F. GRADING PLAN

Course Work will be weighted as follows:

 

Class Participation         10%

Homework                      15%

Projects                           25%

Weekly Quizzes              25%

Exams                             25%

 

 

 

Papers:

One paper is required Due end of 3rd complete week Q1. Pick your topic. This paper will be the equivalent of a project in weight.

 

-       Industry and Internet Ethics

-       The social impact of “Communication on Demand”

 

 

Projects:
Projects will be assigned quarterly and will align with the competencies covered in the quarter. Projects will cover 4 of the following topics according to class interest:

 

GPS and GIS in Communications

Web Page Design

Technical Design using CAD

 Photography

 

Projects are due 1 week prior to end of Quarter.

QUIZZES:
Quizzes at minimum will be weekly covering competencies covered; however, instructor reserves the right to give unannounced quizzes.

 

EXAMs

Midterm and final semester exams will be given covering project topics and competencies.

 

 

FINAL EXAM:
The final exam will be comprehensive and cover all competencies from Semester 1 and 2.

 

Semester grades are calculated as indicated above.

Final grades are calculated as follows:

S1       40%

S2       40%

Final   20%

Absences for which a medical or court excuse is provided (professional letterhead required) will be recorded. All other absences are considered unexcused. Any significant tardy (>4 min late) or early departure from class will be figured as an absence.

GENERAL:
Your recorded grades will be available for your review at any convenient time. Do remember to
keep all work  and quizzes returned to you so that any discrepancies can be easily and fairly straightened out. Except in cases of actual error, final grades are permanent.
